#12Boston College, #11 Miami, #10 Georgia Tech, #9 Virginia Tech, #8 NC State, #7 Wake Forest, #6 Florida State, #5 Maryland, #4 North Carolina, #3 Clemson, and #2 Virginia.
But before we go through the remaining school, I want to signal what's coming next... I'll give you an ACC summary on Monday morning. What we've learned and what (who) to watch this season.
And then we'll move to our next conference, the PAC 10.
And then we'll move to our next conference, the PAC 10.
OK back to the countdown.
#1. Duke
The Digital Scouting Report
Strengths: Very well organized. Elevates Twitter feed into the basketball site. Great URL in GoDuke.com. Duke Blue Planet TV gives a solid look into the program.
Weaknesses: Some of the best content is not connected into the site, limiting the connection that they could achieve. Duke Blue Planet and Coach K sites should somehow be linked. Limited clarity on what you get for paying for inside access. (And having to pay in general feels off)
Full Scouting Report:
One visit to the Duke athletics site, here, and you see a pretty organized site. You see ways to follow the Blue Devils via Facebook, Twitter, or RSS on the right hand side, leveraging their recognizable logos. You also see a way to get Inside Access beneath that.
When you click to "Learn More", you actually don't really learn more. What you learn is what this costs -- you get right into choosing the package you want and there isn't much explanation on what you get for that. I am a fan of charging for live games on the net, as many teams are doing. But for the connection and stories, I think that should be hyped and given to everyone to share.
Clicking on the Twitter icon takes you here, to the Duke Athletics Twitter feed, here. They have just over 400 followers now (up from the 357 when I grabbed this image). As you'd expect, it is a full run down on all Duke sports, but updated pretty regularly.
OK, diving into the basketball home page takes us here. I'm a pretty big fan of the consistency between home page of athletics and home page of hoops.
On the left hand part of the page, you'll see a Duke in the NBA link. Clicking on it gives you an image and a list of statistics, shown below. It's ok, but I was hoping for more. Give me the story of these players, what they accomplished at Duke and in the league!
Scrolling down the page and things get super cool. You will see their Twitter feed (1,200 followers - link here) is pulled into the site, shown in the image below. So, simply put, you don't have to have a Twitter account to see the latest news from Duke Men's BB. That's pretty amazing. I think everyone should be doing this. NICE!!!
In case you wanted to see it, the full Duke Men's Basketball Twitter page is here.
Hoops assistants Collins (over 1,600 followers) and Wojo (over 1,800 followers) plus Duke Blue Planet (outlined below) also are up on Twitter. They aren't pulled into the site. Similarly, the best Duke hoops content is not linked in. I'll take you quickly to two places, Coach K.com and Duke Blue Planet.
First, Coach K's site (image below):
The site includes a pretty updated blog, and you really see that Coach K cares more about players as people. Very much a leadership feel to the site. And he includes his music taste, here.
Moving to Duke Blue Planet (link here), you get hit by what it means to be in the program. (Finally!)
There is a pretty solid blog, with updated features on what the team is up to. They use this blog (link here) to offer player features and general news on the program - current and alumni.
And there's a great section on playing for Coach K. This is much needed, as Coach K is a legend. And as we covered earlier, he not only focuses on developing you athletically but as a leader. I was hoping for a section like this and found it.
We see testimonials from alumni, shown below. I only wish this was a bit more emotional. Give me video interviews, or give me more access to more players. I know Coach K made a monster impact on these alumni, and these players are a key to what you get when you sign up to play at Duke.
Duke Blue Planet offers a tour of Duke's campus, letting you feel what you'd be a part of. Here's a shot of the tour of Cameron Indoor.
And, finally, here's Blue Planet TV - the video home of Duke Basketball. They share Duke highlights, player interviews, tours of campus and the locker room, and emotional stories on Duke's culture. You can take these with you via iTunes or Facebook.
All in all, this site gives you a great feel of what you get when you join the program. Which is exactly what digital should do for a team. I only want to see them expand. Publish senior videos, publish interviews with former players, and continue to build on this great foundation.
Thanks for staying with me! I'll get into the ACC recap Monday and then we'll keep moving!
