Breaking Down The Atlantic Coast Conference Online

Each week we will break down a different conference across the D-1 landscape, giving you a look into how they are connecting with fans (and recruits) across their website and social media. Along the way, we'll elevate a few things in each conference that are best-in-class: what we can learn from the schools that make up each conference.

This week we shift to our regular format. Based on how squads finished last season.

Thanks to the Duke University Blue Devils' National Title, we'll dive into the Atlantic Coast Conference, linked here and shown below. You can tune in on this blog, or you can follow along on Facebook (linked here) or on Twitter -- I'm @pawlow34.

Today, we'll start with a look into their website. What's to love about the ACC?

The ACC embraces history. They celebrate it. They create a recognizes the power that has come through the conference. The ACC home page gives us access The history. And on the home page, we see a tout for ACC Players of the Decades.

Clicking into it here, brings us to a wall of amazingness. Shown below, you'll see a large highlight reel of Tim Duncan, along with a series of additional athletes who have competed in the conference.

Each player can easily (with one click) be shared via email.

This content extends to other sports (see football gallery below).

How could this be better? The videos are fantastic, and the depth of athletes is mindblowing. Now we need to empower fans to see this and share it. I think this gallery should absolutely come to life as a tab in the ACC's Facebook page. Thus, allowing for easy sharing and viewing of the videos and living in a more youthful world. Doing this opens the door for fan contests!

The ACC elevates championships.
Championships are elevated and alive. Click into ACC Championships Central, here, and you are taken to a quick directory of sports, dates, and a sweet Twitter feed. This ensures that, year round, when you hit the Championships page it will both alert you to what's coming and feel dynamic. Nice.

Clicking into basketball, we see last year's Championship detailed in images, stats, a bracket, and a game-by-game post game media section. Here's that link.

And, as you can see here, you get a glance at the schools who won the other titles (on the left) along with the latest ACC Men's Basketball Tweets (on the right). This is a fantastic, customized take down from the main Championships page.

How could this be better? The infrastructure's here. Now we should look at elevating a personality (or personalities) who can bring fans of each sport to life in each Championship. Perhaps it's former student athletes or current coaches, or a media expert - the opportunity is here to take this framework and bring fans to life inside it.

The ACC delivers a deep weekly perspective. As you'll see in the image below, the home page of the ACC gives us access to a weekly feature, Bill Hass on the ACC. This is a unique approach to in-season coverage of all sports. They leverage Bill Hass, who is a long time (36 years long) journalist and "observer of the ACC." His weekly updates are set out to keep us plugged into all things, all sports.

Clicking in takes us here, shown below.

From here, you can check a full list of Hass' take on the conference. Incredible depth, and taking a consistent unbiased look at the league each week is both addicting and smart.

How could this be better? This is so asking to be a blog. A simple shift to a blog would allow the ACC to bring more storytelling into things. It would allow fans the chance to easily navigate for posts about their school, or their sport. It would be easier to share (to Facebook and Twitter) or subscribe. And it'd be more natural to include pictures.

What's up next? ACC week continues tomorrow. We will take a peak at how the Atlantic Coast Conference is leveraging social media. Then, we'll wrap the week up with 3 peaks into things I found fantastic across the 12-team ACC landscape.

Finally, don't forget you can follow along on Facebook (linked here) or on Twitter -- I'm @pawlow34.
