Hit the OVC Sports home page and look down the right hand column. There, calling to us like a beacon is the social media box...
Diving in takes us here, to a directory all things social about the conference (shown below). The description for Blogger (the OVC Blog) intrigued me off the bat -- "Fans can simply click the link and get interesting tidbits about the OVC." It's time to go deeper...
I clicked in. Linked here is the OVC Insider Blog. What's great about this blog is that it is just as advertised -- a collection of interesting ways member schools have surfaced in the news. It's a collection of game recaps and conference announcements mixed with media coverage (ESPN) and National Rankings. More importantly, there is a consistent voice that is sharing this information with us (rather than telling information to us!)
This is important for all of us, but arguably more important in the OVC. It's hard to find all the stories about your team (and league) through the clutter online. And the OVC acts as a helpful filter, surfacing what's interesting and doing it in a way we can identify with and subscribe to. It saves us time and we learn more just from visiting this space.
How could this be better? Don't limit yourselves to the mainstream media. Look for interesting things each school is doing in social media and elevate it -- thus becoming closely connected with each school's Facebook and Twitter presence. This will both grow the reader base of a great blog while also connecting the blog more deeply into the vibe of the OVC.
