Breaking Down the Big 12 Conference Online

Each week we will break down a different conference across the D-1 landscape, giving you a look into how they are connecting with fans (and recruits) across their website and social media. Along the way, we'll elevate a few things in each conference that are best-in-class: what we can learn from the schools that make up each conference.

You can stay plugged into this journey via this blog, via the Digital Hoops Blast Facebook page (linked here) or on Twitter -- I'm @pawlow34.

As a reminder, we break down leagues based on how squads finished last season. Thus far we've checked out the ACC, Horizon, Big Ten, and Big East. It's time to keep moving... The Big 12 came close to the Final Four, losing Baylor & Kansas State in the Elite 8, so we'll pick things up there (liked here and shown below)...

Today, we'll start with a look into the Big 12 Conference Official Website. What's to love about the Big 12?

This is pretty interesting. The Big 12 Conference created a franchise to elevate the league around performance and music. The idea is pretty simple - take the best highlights from around the league (for every sport), then set them to music at the end of the year. But rather than set them to just any music, the league wanted to set something that was true to them, across all sports. I'm guessing that's the chief reason why they didn't go the route of "One Shining Moment." The song "Live Your Dreams" was created by a former Baylor Football player and his band, August Rose. The site has this concept applied to men's and women's basketball, along with football. Check this out here.

How could this be better? More, more, and more. We can never get enough highlight packages. In fact, what I'd like to see is not just more reels for every sport (beyond hoops & football), but to look at school-specific packages. Why not create a Kansas Athletics package each year, for example? That would both foster a deeper connection between the conference office and the schools and give the fans something to rally behind. If you already own the music, and you can build more of a connection to performance, why not?

The Big 12 Leverages a National Reporter for In-Season Coverage via an Insider Blog, here. Elevating National Reporter Wendel Barnhouse to cover what's the latest in the conference is a smart idea. Fans look to conferences for an objective lay-of-the-land, and to do this you really need someone who can both understand the flow of the league and the context of the league now versus past years. This blog is solid in that you get quick snippets of information that can quickly arm you with a water-cooler knowledge base.

How could this be better? The blog is set up to give you snippets of the conference as a whole. That means all schools, all sports. As in like Kansas Basketball? Cool. Here's that plus some Baylor Football. To really maximize this, they would do 2 things. 1) allow for easy access to the schools and sports of your choosing and 2) make it easy to subscribe for updates to be delivered to you.

The Big 12 Elevates the New Student Athletes joining the league. As you'll see on this page (here), the Big 12 lists out all of the new recruits joining the league. I think this is a really under-utilized concept, both for fans and prospective student athletes. Don't make me go school by school to get a sense for who's joining the league. Give it to me in one spot, and let me understand the context...

How could this be better? Now that it's here, let's steal a little from the Insider Blog concept. Don't just report the signings, give us context. Why are these kids good additions? Who's class is the best? Which players are most likely to make an impact and why? Context can really help cement this area as a destination for all -- fans want the latest and recruits want to understand the context of where they are going -- both from an unbiased authority.

That's it for now!

Big 12 week continues tomorrow. We will take a peak at how the Big 12 is leveraging social media. Then, we'll wrap the week up with 3 peaks into things I found fantastic across the 12-team (for now) conference landscape.

Thanks for sticking with me.
