West Coast Conference Basketball Marketing: #7 San Diego

We'll keep moving through the West Coast Conference, looking at how programs are communicating to young athletes (or fans) from a digital point of view. Websites and digital marketing are the great equalizer -- a place where every program can share what they stand for. And I'd argue all of this is even more critical for the Mid Majors out there. Smart marketing can help build that connection that gets you the athlete you need.

Thus far our journey has shown us #8 St Mary's.

Let's go.

#7 San Diego

The Digital Scouting Report

Strengths: Men's Basketball team is up on Twitter!

Weaknesses: Really missing an infusion of energy, consistency, and fun into this experience.

Full Scouting Report:
Hitting the Toreros site, here, and you get a sea of blue (nice) but really nothing that focuses you in on a single area. (not nice) It's time to drill around.

The Fan Zone menu unveils a pretty solid photo gallery area, where there's a good amount of posting of photos after each game. You can sort this by sport to get your hoops fix. But it could be better, if they allowed us to share these photos to our Facebook page or add our own photos to a gallery.

The Multimedia menu opens up a CBS All-Access window that lets you sort by sport to see what's there. It's a lot of steps to get somewhere, and (as you can see below) when I went the only hoops content that existed (Game Replays) were not available...

So I moved on to the basketball home page, here. You'll notice that the same photo gallery referenced above is also available here. I'm a fan of getting the most out of the content that you have, and USD does in this case.
Solid.

There isn't much that appears to be available. Then I scrolled down the page. As you can see below, you are able to get access to the Hoops team on Twitter, along with the Basketball Media Guide. Nice! (I just wish it wasn't so buried... let's check it out).

San Diego basketball on Twitter is here, with 176 followers. I'd give them a grade of fair on this. They are up and running, but the posts really aren't consistent yet. I would love to see that insider look into the team. Where are they? How is the practice? Share some personality that will help us feel more connected to you.

Finally, the Media Guide (shown below) is either downloadable or something you can thumb through online. Check.

That's it. There is a glimpse at what could be in connecting with this year's team but it needs a little more energy and emotion. That said, the foundation is in place for big things to come.

Come back tomorrow as we keep moving through the WCC.

Andy
