MVC College Basketball Marketing: #7 Drake

We'll keep moving through the Missouri Valley Conference, looking at how programs are communicating to young athletes (or fans) from a digital point of view. Websites and digital marketing are the great equalizer -- a place where every program can share what they stand for. And I'd argue all of this is even more critical for the Mid Majors out there. Smart marketing can help build that connection that gets you the athlete you need.

Thus far our journey has shown us #10 Creighton,#9 Evansville, and #8 Indiana State.

Let's keep moving.

#7 Drake
The Digital Scouting Report

Strengths: Facebook, Twitter, and Blog foundation is here, plus I'm digging the Bulldogs on the National Stage area

Weaknesses: Some of the blog areas haven't been updated since the 2007-08 season.

Full Scouting Report:
This one's tough to do. It's my alma matter. And I want nothing more than to be blown away!

I'll preface my review saying that as a Drake hoops alum, I've been to this site before. But never through the lens of today's recruit. So I'm a little more eager than normal to go check out this site.

Hit the Drake athletics home page, here, and you'll have a pretty bold header welcoming you in.

Mousing over the Fan Zone menu unveils access to Facebook, Twitter, and Blogs. Solid.

Let's check them out. Clicking into Drake on Facebook takes you here, with 644 followers. Drake isn't really that active here, simply sharing updates that post on the DU athletics site. Feels like this is being under-utilized as a chance to energize students around upcoming games.

Clicking into Drake on Twitter takes you here. With 316 followers, they do a pretty good job of covering all key sports with in-game updates and some insight (check this example):
"15:14 in 1st half: Creighton 7, Drake 6...Stanley makes 1st start, replacing Hawley in lineup as Dogs go with 3 guards"
That said, they cover all sports and thus you're not just getting men's hoops updates but rather everything the athletics department is able to get to.

The Drake True Blue Blog takes you here, to the official athletics department blogs. As you'll see though, there isn't any coverage of men's basketball at this time.

Moving on to the basketball home page and you'll see that header has now evolved to take on Senior Josh Young's image. Nicely done from a branding point of view.

Clicking around the basketball site, we have access to the Yearbook, shown below. You are able to browse it online, in total or by the section of your choice. And, as you'll see below, they offer easy access to email this off to someone.

The Yearbook itself is pretty easy to navigate online, as you can see here.

The basketball home page gives you access to additional Bulldogs content here...

First, I loved seeing the National Exposure called out. This is an area I had struggles with in not seeing on the Creighton or Indiana State sites. Now Drake hasn't had much exposure since their monster year in 2008 but I loved seeing this here. It is a reminder to the recruit that Drake has been there and you can help them get there again.

They offer Player Spotlights, which is great stuff - giving you a personal look at each player, in text. The downside is these haven't been updated in two years -- showing Josh Young as a Sophomore and not including any of the new Bulldogs. This is a simple one that needs to get fixed quickly as it can really help connect us with the program.

They also set up Josh Young with his own blog on the site... Which also has been dark for the past 2 years or so. This is a case of something that should be updated or turned off. Naturally, I'm in the camp of get this thing updated! (And then linked into Drake's True Blue Blog of course)

What you don't have in the basketball section (and what updating that blog would help fix) is a connection to this year's team. Who are they? How are they adjusting to a rough conference? Help is out there.

Assistant Coaches Justin Ohl (166 followers, click here) and Kareem Richardson (74 followers, click here) are both on Twitter but have slowed in their updates since the season started. They are pretty good in providing nice insight into basketball, but need to stay committed to posting insights and engaging fans to make an impact.

That's it. Come back Monday as we move into the top 6 in the Valley.

Andy
